The Boston Massacre was not a war, and it did not happen during a war. The Boston Massacre was a confrontation between a rowdy mob of people in Boston and a small detachment of British troops. Five civilians eventually died of wounds received during the event.

News of the Sand Creek massacre outraged many citizens in the east. Since the massacre took place during the US Civil War, the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War investigated the incident.
Sand Creek, November of 1864 was the sight of a massacre. Colonel Chivington, unwilling to take prisoners, opened fire on Black Kettle's tribe who were peaceably flying a white flag. The tensions had begun regarding land and mining rights, and ended in an all out massacre.
Richard Ritter has written: 'War on the Southern Plains' -- subject(s): Cheyenne Indians, Indians of North America, Sand Creek Massacre, Colo., 1864, Wars, Wars, 1864
The US response to help out after the Sand Creek massacre was writing a new treaty that offered the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes other reservations. As with previous treaties federal officials did not enforce its provisions. None of the tribes ever received the land they were promised. When the US Civil War ended, it became clear that Native Tribes were in the way of US plans to settle the West. This would work out badly over the next 25 years for Native Americans.
It is only one more item to add to a list of shameful happening like My Lai, American slavery, Sand Creek, The Trail of Tears, the Civil War POW camps or the Black Kettle Massacre at the Washita.
Dear readers: In the main most of the definitions posted here are incorrect or inaccurate in some form or fashion. One of the most often made mistakes about the Sand Creek Massacre is that the attacking soldiers were "militia" which they were not. The soldiers were parts of two duly authorised cavalry regiments under the chain-of-command of the United States War Department and designated at U. S. Volunteers or the 1st and 3rd Regiment Cavalry, Colorado (U. S.) Volunteers as were most of the soldiers who fought on the Federal or Union side during the Civil War. Militia, directly or indirectly mitigates the culpability of the soldiers and more especially their leaders, officers and politicians that this was some sort of "mob." It is for the reason that these were U. S. soldiers that the U. S. Army, the Dept. of Interior, General and Staff officers and the U. S. Government generally never denied responsibility for the action nor did they ever deny it was a massacre. For more accurate information contact the Sand Creek Massacre, National Historic Site, NPS in Kiowa County, Colorado where staff can put the curious and the researchers in touch with a body of bona fide Sand Creek scholars.
