The negatives are: The cats might turn against you :D

The cat you kill might be pregnant or be needed to tend to a family.

There is the possibility that the cat you kill is highly depended on and that death could lead to more.

And you might get arrested or something

Feral cats are wild cats and are deathly afraid of human contact. If a cat hasn't had any human contact when it was young it would probably end up being a feral cat. We have feral cats that we feed and they sleep inside our boat because we pull the cover back so they can get in. Even though we take care of them, they are still wild animals and should never be thought of as pets.

The most serious effects of feral cats on the environment have been in places where cats did not originally exist, such as islands where people have introduced them for a variety of reasons. In some cases, cats have been dumped on islands where rats had already done a great deal of damage. After dealing with the rat problem, the cats then had to find other prey to eat. Think about it.

Feral cats do a lot off damage to bird life. As mentioned above especially where cats are not native animals.

In countries like New Zealand which have Flightless Birds they have completed eradicated birds in some areas.

Also they eat lizards and large insects.

Personally, I would describe them as more of a nuisance than harmful. Since feral cats are not generally given veterinary care, they get sick and carry diseases. They also deposit their waste anywhere they like, serenade and fight at night and search for food wherever they can find it. They can also breed unabated, so feral cat colonies can become quite large.

There are some wonderful rescue groups who work to help feral cats through TNR - trap, neuter, return. They trap the cats, give them medical care including neutering, then release them back where they were caught. The kittens and socialized cats might be kept and adopted out. This improves the health outlook of the cats, reduces their population growth, and is more successful (and preferable) than 'trap and kill'.

Feral cats are, perhaps, the greatest threat to song birds and other small animals, such as mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Every year billions of these small wildlife species are killed by feral cats. In some cases, especially on some island habitats, the feral cats have been the cause of extinction of a number of wildlife species. For more information you might want to read this article from the Smithsonian.Feral cats can also carry diseases, including rabies, which can be spread to humans and our pets. Read this article from the CDC.

They can occasionally cause some property damage and damage to gardens and flower beds. I care for wildlife at my home for a wildlife rescue group and have had caged birds I am holding in my patio severely injured by feral cats prowling the neighborhood at night. You will find few wildlife rehabilitators or supporters that like the TNR procedure as it does little to solve the problem of rampant native wildlife slaughter. Euthanasia of feral cats not only is a kindness to these cats but also conserves our natural wildlife.

Feral cats are not harmful. They are simply frightened cats who never had human touch and socialization. They need access to food, water, and patient attention from caring humans!
