Feral Cats

Free roaming felines, feral cats are the 'wild' offspring of domestic cats, and are primarily the result of pet owners' abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled. Feral cat 'colonies' can be found in alleys, parks, abandoned buildings, and rural areas. They are elusive and do not trust humans.

How do you keep stray cats from urinating on the outside of your house?

Unfortunately, there is mating time and this is usually when cats will spray on everything (also inside the house if you own one and they are not spayed or neutered.) If you go to your pet store they do have a special spray out that you can spray around the perimeter of your home. Other than this, there isn't much else you can do.

How old does the cat have to be when can you desex a cat?

The ideal age for neutering kittens is about four or five months old, although some vets will do this as early as eight or twelve weeks. It is best to neuter and spay kittens before they reach six months old, as this is the average time they will become sexually mature.

How are feral cats harmful?

Feral cats are, perhaps, the greatest threat to song birds and other small animals, such as mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Every year billions of these small wildlife species are killed by feral cats. In some cases, especially on some island habitats, the feral cats have been the cause of extinction of a number of wildlife species. For more information you might want to read this article from the Smithsonian.Feral cats can also carry diseases, including rabies, which can be spread to humans and our pets. Read this article from the CDC.

They can occasionally cause some property damage and damage to gardens and flower beds. I care for wildlife at my home for a wildlife rescue group and have had caged birds I am holding in my patio severely injured by feral cats prowling the neighborhood at night. You will find few wildlife rehabilitators or supporters that like the TNR procedure as it does little to solve the problem of rampant native wildlife slaughter. Euthanasia of feral cats not only is a kindness to these cats but also conserves our natural wildlife.

Should you worry if your two-year-old cat starts wheezing but has clear eyes and no fever and a good appetite?

You should take your cat to the vet because wheezing can be a sign of infection or other diseases. Perhaps your cat has allergies. It's up to the vet to diagnose this problem. Good luck!

How do you stop someone from feeding a stray cat on your property without confronting the person and how do you get rid of the cat?

As for the trespasser I would call the police the next time I saw them there and have them escorted off my property and asked not to come back. Record the license number of their vehicle or if it is a neighbor give that information to the police also. The cat can be trapped using a Havaheart trap. They are on loan from many animal control organizations around the country and are simple to use.

Can wild kittens be tamed?

No. Domesticated and adapted to people are two different things. I have adopted many 'feral" cats. They have adapted to me but they very much still act wild. If you take a wild cat from the wild (bobcat, caracal, serval, etc) it will retain all of it's natural instincts but it will adapt to you being it's provider of food and shelter. It will also grow accustom to you but it will very much still be wild. It may not be able to survive in the wild, though, as it was never taught to survive in the wild.

How does the jaguars hunt?

Jaguars are capable of killing just about any type of prey they encounter. They can kill animals ranging in size from an armadillo that weighs 1 kg (2 lb) to a cow that weighs more than 450 kg (1,000 lb). Jaguars hunt by walking slowly along trails, watching and listening for prey. They also wait in ambush beside trails and will leap into the water in pursuit of prey. They hunt when their prey is most active. In areas where they feed on nocturnal prey, they hunt at night. Jaguars preying on cattle often hunt during the daytime, and they usually kill caiman and turtles while these reptiles bask beside the water during the day. Jaguars have an unusual method of killing large prey. Whereas lions, tigers, and leopards kill with a throat or neck bite, jaguars often kill large prey by biting through the skull between the ears. Jaguars also use their powerful jaws and strong canine teeth to break open the heavy shells of large river turtles. Empty broken turtle shells with traces of jaguar hair around the openings are often found on favorite turtle-nesting beaches. No other big cat regularly hunts turtles and caimans, and some scientists have speculated that the jaguar’s robust canine teeth and enormously powerful bite developed specifically to pierce the armor of these reptiles. After killing a large animal, a jaguar will usually drag the carcass into dense cover before beginning to eat. If the kill is made in an open area, jaguars often drag their prey for considerable distances. they eat rests of animals and..don't forget that their favourite food is...OCELOT!
