Feral Cats

Free roaming felines, feral cats are the 'wild' offspring of domestic cats, and are primarily the result of pet owners' abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled. Feral cat 'colonies' can be found in alleys, parks, abandoned buildings, and rural areas. They are elusive and do not trust humans.

How do feral cats breed?

There is no difference in how feral cats reproduce than in domesticated cats. Ferals just do not have a human (yet) to watch over them; that's the only difference between domesticated and feral cats.

How do cats perspire?

Dogs only sweat through their feet.

Dogs reduce their temperature by panting which cools them by evaporating water from their tongue.

Dogs cannot sweat as we do, as they have very few sweat glands and most of these are in their foot pads. They mainly cool themselves down by panting and breathing, with the lining of the lungs as the evaporative surface.

How can you domesticate a feral cat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have done this many times.I have a cage (fairly large) that I put a litter pan and toys and a small towel hammock.Put it in a location that the kitty can see and hear you and your daily activity.Talk to it and spend time hanging around the cage talking in a soothing manner.Slowly begin to try to interact with a toy.Take the kitty out a few times a day and hold it.(sometimes you need a good glove for this!) Dont use the glove to long or it will scare the kitty. I have found it does not take long for them to enjoy the love and companionship over their fear.It generally takes me about 3-4 weeks for total trust.Be PATIENT!! You will be rewarded with alot of love. Good luck!!

What do you give a cat for diahrea?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There can be a number of causes for diarrhoea in a cat. The most common ones are changes to the normal food, the food isn't agreeing with the cat or is being given human food too frequently. Even stress or a change in environment can cause diarrhoea in some cats, such as moving furniture around.

Bland food is very easy on the stomach. Plain cooked chicken (tiny amounts of rice are often recommended also, but are not compulsory) helps calm the cat's stomach, and should be fed for a few days, or until the cat's bowel movements are back to normal. Cooked white fish can also help.

In addition to plain foods, malt pastes such as "Pro-kolin" are also very effective. This should be available at your local vet and in some pet shops. Malt pastes encourage beneficial bacterial flora in the cat's stomach and gut, which help calm the digestive system. Most cats like the taste and will lick this off a finger.

It is imperative that you get your cat to drink as much as possible during this time. Diarrhoea is very dehydrating which can cause even more problems (and quickly can become fatal in kittens). Adding a little chicken stock (the juice the chicken was cooked in) into the cat's water, or enticing it to drink some kitten or cat milk usually works.

If the diarrhoea has not cleared up in two or three days, take the cat to the vet.

How do you look after a feral cat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

My own cat used to be feral before I made him an indoor pet. Now, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by your question, but I will try to explain some things.

Feral cats will not be very friendly toward humans if they aren't treated well or even in contact with humans at an early age. However, some feral cats might be friendly simply because their parents were.

If you want to make your cat an indoor cat, go slowly. Bring him in for short periods of time, but let him out when he wants to go. He might get used to or even like coming inside, but with some cats, they aren't willing to let the outdoors go, so don't force them.

While going through these stages, refrain from scaring them, even if they do something like scratching the furniture. If you hit the cat, they might not come back when you let them out. Plus, this behavior might be a result of anxiety from being kept inside, away from what they've always known.

What is the best solution to over population of feral cats in Tehama County California?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

By far the best solution to population control in feral cats is a Spay and Release program.

Feral cats are well equipped to take care of themselves, especially when they bond together into "colonies". Humans can make their lives easier by feeding them regularly, or capturing them to take to the vet when they need medical care. Feral cat agencies are very useful in coordinating this kind of effort, and providing resources for free vet care.

Of course, the easier their lives, the more they'll reproduce - if they're not spayed. So any responsible feral cat agency has a spay/neuter program. In Berkeley, cats have a triangle-shaped notch in their ear if they've been spayed (it is done while they are under for the surgery and does not hurt them.) So that way, people know which cats still need to be captured and brought in for the procedure.

Classification of humans?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

CLASSIFICATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Human rights can be classified in a number of different ways. Some rights may fall into more than one of the available categories. One of the most widely used classifications distinguishes two general categories: classic or civil and political rights, and social rights that also include economic and cultural rights. Classic rights generally restrict the powers of the government in respect of actions affecting the individual and his or her autonomy (civil rights) and confer an opportunity upon people to contribute to the determination of laws and participate in government (political rights). Social rights require the governments to act in a positive, interventionist manner so as to create the necessary conditions for human life and development. The governments are expected to take active steps toward promoting the well-being of all its members out of social solidarity. It is believed that everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization of the economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) indispensable for his or her dignity and the free development of his or her personality.

All human rights carry corresponding obligations that must be translated into concrete duties to guarantee these rights. For many years, traditional human rights discourse was dominated by the misperception that civil and political rights require only negative duties while economic, social and cultural rights require positive duties. In this view, the right to free speech is guaranteed when the state leaves people alone, whereas the state must take positive action to guarantee the right to health by building health clinics and providing immunization.

This positive versus negative dichotomy has been discredited recently in favor of the understanding that all human rights have both positive and negative components. It is a matter of common sense that civil and political rights, including free speech, require the positive outlay of state resources in terms of providing a functioning judicial system and educating people about their rights. Conversely, all ESCR have negative aspects; some states prevent people from freely exercising ESCR, for example by blocking food or medical supplies to disfavored groups or regions.

Most scholars and activists now agree that duties for all human rights -- civil and political as well as ESCR -- can be divided into several discrete categories based on the type of duties. Although there is some variation in these typologies, they converge along the following basic categories: the duties to respect, protect, and fulfill.

The duty to respect is the negative obligation. It requires responsible parties to refrainfrom acting in a way that deprives people of the guaranteed right. Regarding the right to health, for example, a government may not deprive certain communities of access tohealth care facilities. The duty to protect is the obligation concerning third parties. It requires responsibleparties to ensure that third parties do not deprive people of the guaranteed right. For example, a government must pass and enforce laws prohibiting private companies fromreleasing hazardous chemicals that impair public health. The duty to fulfill is the positive obligation. It requires responsible parties to establish political, economic, and social systems that provide access to the guaranteed right for all members of society. For example, a government must provide essential health services such as accessible primary care and clean water.
