PC failures are caused by many different environmental and human factors. Five passive preventive maintenance procedures involve heat, dust, magnetism, power supply problems, and static electricity.

Heat - Keep temperature between 70 and 74 degrees to prevent components from overheating

Dust - Use a non-static vacuum to remove dust or a natural bristle paintbrush to wipe components off. Dust can build up inside a computer acting as an insulator for internal components; trapping heat and preventing adequate cooling of components

Magnetism - Keep sensitive components away from devices such as; CRT monitors, speakers, motors, and generators because they contain magnets. Maintain proper storage is crucial for floppy and hard drive because they use magnets for storage. Magnetic fields located close to a computer can cause undesired effects or even data loss.

Power - Make sure you have the proper power sources, such as surge protectors, line conditioners, standby power supply (SPS), and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in place. This will prevent surges, spikes, sags, brownouts, and blackouts, which could cause damage to internal components and loss of data.

Static electricity - Keep humidity between 40 and 70 percent to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD)
