a gradient when used in photoshop is a layer that when selected has the option of having a start colour that moves through shades of that colour to another. I.e. starts white and as it moves down the page for instance wll go darker and darker until it black.
It lets you apply a black&white or color gradient to a layer or a selection. You apply the gradient by clicking where you want one side of the gradient to start, then dragging outward from there, and letting go where you want the other side of the gradient to end.
Nice transition between shades of colors.
Select the gradient tool and set the tool to linear gradient in the gradient's palette. Choose one of the metal presets. Click add noise to make it look grainy and then add motion blur.
In Photoshop for instance, it is used to shade an area of something. If you took a blank work area and dragged your gradient tool across it, you will see that it looks like a large shadow going from light to dark.
First select gradient then look at Options bar which is below menus. Click on rectangle with gradient which is in Options bar (first option) to open Gradient Editor dialog then select different gradient if you want. Click on image and drag. That's basics but this tool can be complex if you don't know how to use it and you need good explanation. See related link for tutorial.
