What's considered to be Lancashire dialect is actually a collection of sub-dialects sharing many common traits in common but with variations according to region. Thus you could say that there are many individual Lancashire dialects -- not just one. Examples of the dialect used in Blackburn in the 1930's would include: Thas = you are; nobut /nowt - nothing; summat = something (as in summat and nowt); reyt = right; neet - night; ger = get; thi - your; si thi - look here (see thee); purit - put it. A very common feature is the so-called glottal-stop letter T (as in the definite article) where "Put it on the table" becomes "Pur it on't'able". In some areas of Lancashire the "o" sound, as in HOUSE is pronounced in a way that I can't illustrate as there is no vowel sound equivalent in standard English. It shows up, interestingly, as common practice among Canadians in and around Toronto. Vestiges of the Lancashire dialect still occur in working class areas and examples of the dialect can be heard in the working-class soap Opera "Coronation Street" accesible on YouTube. Your author grew up in Blackburn in the 30s with his , sad to say, semi literate grandmother (she began work in the cotton mills at age 11) and he had lots of opportunities to hear the Blackburn version of the Lancashire dialect.
