Most people think all of Mexico is "wild country" where drug cartels reign and terrorize the population. The truth is, the Mexican War on Drugs is a very localized conflict afflicting very few geographical locations, including most cities along the US-Mexico Border, as well as those along major drug trafficking routes into the Unites States:

Border Cities:

  • Ciudad Juarez
  • Nuevo Laredo
  • Tijuana

Northern cities along major drug trafficking routes:

  • Torreon
  • Saltillo
  • Chihuahua
  • Durango
  • Monterrey

Coastal central and southern cities which act as port of entry for drug shipments from other countries:

  • Acapulco
  • Mazatlan
  • Culiacan
  • Tepic
  • Veracruz

The remaining areas and regions in Mexico are safer; there are even some regions in Mexico which are much safer than their counterparts in the developed world. One example is the state of Yucatan, safer than Canada (1.7 murders per 100,000 vs. Canada's 2.1 murders per 100,000).
