There are a few different types of strands out there. My son had it about six months ago the doctor said that it comes from eating something (this will sound gross) that has come in contact with fecal matter or raw meat such as chicken. In my sons case he was visiting a farm that had free range chickens and was playing with the pebbles. In the area they found that there was a small outbreak from city kids going to visit the farms. Ironically the farm kids seem to have built up a tolerance.
There have been reports done that you can also get it from eating at places that the people do not wash their hands (yes after the toilet even though there are signs requiring them to) or use new gloves before serving you food instead of the ones they just took your money with. There was a shocking study done about getting ice cream in New Zealand and how much e-coli they found on the scoops.
Again it depends on how clean a food place is so if they look sketchy don't eat there. If they don't wash their hands demand that they do before serving you. I would just rather not eat at any place that looks sketchy. If you do catch it drink lots of liquids and go immediately to the doctor it is a reportable disease some people in the food industry if they get it don't report it because you can not return to work until your fecal samples are negative for a week. So please if you do get it go to the doctor and not spread it around!!

It is not possible to prevent E. coli in swine, as E. coli is a necessary bacteria for healthy digestion and intestinal function. However, it is possible to greatly reduce the prevalence of E. coli diarrhea in piglets in the first week after farrowing by focusing on sanitation and hygiene in the farrowing crates.
the most probable sources to e-coli disease is eating contaminated food because that is where most cases originate from. that and maybe your mom gave you some bad cooking.
Could be other sources but anal/ fecal contact/sex would provide the e-coli source to the Urinary Tract.
