A:The Bible does not list the Ten Commandments individually, but simply as prose text. Therefore, it is possible to interpret exactly which injunctions are contained in each commandment, although the overall meaning is the same. Judaism, most Protestant and allied Churches and the Orthodox Churches consider the third commandment to be not to take the name of the Lord in vain. The Roman Catholic Church considers the third commandment to be to keep the Sabbath.

Judaism considers the third commandment as a a prohibition against making false oaths in the name of the God of Israel, specifically those which are pointless, insincere or never carried out. Protestantism generally reads this more broadly to include a requirement to speak reverently of God and his works. A more extreme position held by some Protestants is that the commandment forbids any and all oaths, including judicial oaths and oaths of allegiance to a government.

The commandment to observer the Sabbath says to do no work on the Sabbath, nor to require or request others to do so or even allow an animal to do so. Read literally, this makes modern life almost impractical. The Roman Catholic Church, apart from observing Sunday as its Sabbath, is rather more liberal in its interpretation than, say, Orthodox Jews. It used to be considered improper to play sports on Sundays, but this is no longer generally seen as a prohibition.
