Taxes go for many services. Some of them are; schools, roads, street lights, parks, zoos, city government, city workers, police, jails, museums, garbage pickup, street cleaners, and many other things. Each of these things gets a bit from the taxes and also have added taxes onto the property tax bill for its support and services. In CA in the late 1970's a tax payer group was able to pass a law about property taxes and today we are loosing parks and other things because the money isn't there anymore. Paying taxes isn't fun, but if we want to have the services they provide we need them.

Property taxes are normally used to fund the services in the area, such as police, fire department, roads (and plowing them!) and local library. Some portion of the taxes are used to fund the school system. If you are getting it for free, it is normally being paid for through property taxes.
