Reef Balls are prefabricated, designed, artificial reef modules used in over 60 countries to rehabilitation oceanic ecosystems such as coral reefs, fishing reefs, mangroves estuaries, and other biological marine communities. They were developed by the Reef Ball Foundation, an international environmental non-profit organization and can be purchased from authorized contractors around the world or molds can be obtained from the Reef Ball Foundation for local production and projects.
Reef Balls features a pH neutralized concrete, specialized surface textures, numerous side holes and a large central void in a concrete unit designed to remain stable in oceanic conditions while minimizing costs and handling requirements. They can be floated into position using an internal bladder system that is supplied with the mold systems. Reef Balls are also commonly used to control beach and shoreline erosion while creating biological habitat.
There have been hundreds of scientific studies proving the benefits of Reef Balls are they are the most widely used designed artificial reef system in the world. Over one half a million Reef Ball modules have been deployed in over 4,000 projects.
The Reef Ball Foundation also supplies without charge a complete manual for reef rehabilitation which is available on their website. For further information, please visit www.reefball.org

Because the Great Barrier Reef extends for 2000 km up the Queensland coast, there are several cities close to the reef. A large city which is closest to where the reef comes in nearest the coast is Cairns.Townsville is a large city along the coast, but the reef is not as accessible and close to shore from there. The southern end of the Great Barrier Reef is around 75km northwest of the port city of Gladstone.Brisbane is the nearest capital city to the Reef, but it is about 530km from the southern end.Contrary to popular overseas opinion, Sydney is nowhere near the Great Barrier Reef, as it is 930 kilometres south of Brisbane.
