Some cancers are idiopathic, meaning, doctors do not know what caused the cancer. Some lung cancer patients never smoked and were not around others who smoked, as one example.

Some common risk factors for cancer include:

  • hereditary, family history (parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, first cousins)
  • exposure to bad sun rays or frequent use of suntanning beds
  • tobacco use (smoking or chewing)
  • exposure to chemical toxins
  • asbestos exposure
  • HIV/AIDS causes a specific type of cancer

However, researchers are still not sure of all the reasons that cause cells to mutate and "turn on" to begin overproduction of cancerous cells.
