I've done some research on protein for weight-lifting puposes. Your body can only absorb a certain amount of protein at any given time. Once over that limit, the excess amount is simply discarded normally (via gastrointestinal system), having contributed nothing nutritionally. So, you can't really eat too much protein. You can eat more than you need; however, the unneeded portion will neither be detrimental nor useful to you.

What can overemphasis on protein rich food lead to?

One problem with eating too much of this nutrient, says the CDC, is that by filling up on protein, you may be eating too little of healthful, carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If you do eat the carbohydrates you need and just add more protein to your diet, you may end up taking in too many calories. Also, many high-protein foods, such as meat and dairy products, can be high in saturated fat. If you have liver or kidney problems, eating too much protein can worsen your condition.
