Fuel pump and fuel filter will have the same symptoms so you need to eliminate one first.

Remove the fuel fill cap and turn on the ignition, you should be able to hear the pump run through the fill hose if you listen, it should also be audible from under the vehicle as well. You will need to be listening as the key is turned since it may only run momentarily to prime the system.

If you hear the pump come on then replace the filter, this should be done quite often to prevent break downs. You can check flow by removing the fuel line at the fuel rail ( have a catch pan ready ) and starting the pump but this will not always be a sure way to tell. Many times a partially clogged filter will allow some fuel to get through but not enough to operate the vehicle. While the filter is off you can check the fuel pump operation the same way ( be careful of spraying fuel )

Purchase a repair manual for your vehicle before starting so you will know whether your filter is located in the tank or out, and the procedure for replacement will be illustrated for you.

What are the signs that the fuel pump is failing on a 1997 Chevy Tahoe?

Sometimes it will feel like hesitation, or set a check engine light and then after 50 miles or a few starts the check engine light will go out. Go have your fuel pressure tested. Have you changed out the fuel filter lately? It may be clogged too....and hope it is that, that is easy compared to replacing a fuel pump.
