For lay (community) CPR, there is no circulation check at all for an Adult. If no breathing, and after 2 breaths, go directly to CPR for an Adult. Do not stop CPR to check for circulation. For a Child, check circulation at carotid artery. For an Infant, check the brachial artery.

The carotid artery which is found in the upper neck of the victim.

Another method is to press firmly on finger/toe nails, colour should change from white back to normal skin colour immediately when good circulation is present.

on your neck there's a crevice and if you feel near your windpipe you will feel your pulse

When the heart pumps it sends out a wave that we call a 'pulse'. There are many pulse points on the body like the pedal pulse on the foot, femoral pulse in the groin, the radial pulse on the inside wrist, the brachial pulse on the inside upper arm, the carotid pulse in the neck, the temporal pulse on the side of the head and the fontanel that babies have.

The easiest pulse to find is the carotid pulse in the neck - Put your index and middle fingers on the mid line of your chin, drag them down to the thyroid cartilage, move them to the side of the trachea and dig in.

In the initial assessment, check for signs of life. During rescue breathing, check for signs of life every 2 minutes. During CPR, don't check for signs of life any more. Unless you see obvious signs of life once CPR is started, continue doing CPR.

You should check the circulation and for signs of life after every two cycles of CPR. Do this by placing your finger on the persons carotid pulse while feeling and listening for signs of breathing.

If no signs of life, continue with CPR. Gurgling or gasping is not considered signs of life. Continue with CPR in this case.
