I am a Catholic and I know for sure that on Good Friday no Masses are said, but there are services that are held and you can receive the Eucharist that was consecrated the day before, Holy Thursday. Like on other important days of Lent, on Good Friday anyone ages 14 and up can't eat meat. Ages 18 and up should abstain (not eat meat) and fast (only one meal, with two smaller snacks which together do not equal another meal). (no snacking in between meals) unless, of course, you have a health condition like Diabetes where you need to eat. There is also a special ceremony where you process to the Cross and venerate it (kiss, touch, bow, etc. to it in symbolic acknowledgement and respect). There isn't a lot of singing if any, because it's a sad day. It's called Good Friday though because we are supposed to rejoice that Jesus has died for us and saved us from sin. Another thing that is normal is to have the Stations of the Cross in the Church.
Easter is the most important time of the year in the Catholic faith. Jesus Christ overcame death!
Holy Saturday is the time in the church when those that have been through a year of instruction in the faith will be received in the Church at this mass. Those that are being received in the church will be baptised, and confirmed during the mass. It's also called the Easter Vigil because it is an evening mass that begins when the sun has set. This mass will usually be 1.5 to 2 hours long. There are many readings and prayers during the mass.
One of the most beautiful experiences of the mass is when those that are being Confirmed will be anointed with Chrism oil and the choir will sing the Bechter Litany, which is a type of musical chant praying to all the Saints asking them to pray for those that are being Confirmed, for God to bless them and us. Very moving and beautiful.
If you ever have an opportunity to go to an Easter Vigil I would suggest that you do. If you are not Catholic you will not be able to receive Communion but you are always welcomed to come to mass.
Catholicism is the one true faith. Come and experience this, go with someone who can explain the mass to you. You won't regret it!
Celebration of the Lord's Passion
which includes:
Liturgy of the Word
Adoration of the Holy Cross
and Holy Communion
Many Churches also have the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.
Morning Prayer ( Liturgy of the Hours). There is no Mass on Holy Saturday, before the Easter Vigil.
Roman Catholic AnswerYes, if Christmas falls on a Saturday, you must attend Mass for the Holy Day, and then again on Sunday for the Sunday. In the United States, the obligation for a Holy Day is abrogated if the Holy Day falls on Saturday only for *some* Holy Days of Obligation - Christmas is NOT one of them.
They don't, Easter Saturday is the Saturday following Easter. Holy Saturday is the day before Easter.
If one saw the movie, The Exorcist, they witnessed a reenactment of the Catholic ritual for demonic possession, also known as an exorcism, in which a priest drives the demon out of the host with the assistance of holy, blessed items such as a cross and holy water. Other religions such as Pagans and Jews have similar rituals.
Although all Catholic churches do follow some of the same rituals, there are many that also have their own rituals. In the Ukrainian Catholic Church, some of the religious rituals include two types of liturgy, the Roman and Byzantine. The celebration of Ukrainian Christmas, the Feast of Jordan, and the season of Lent.
To the best of my knowledge the Hindus and the Catholic Church have nothing whatsoever in common in the way of religious rituals or ceremonies. The Catholic Church's rituals and ceremonies are rooted in the ancient Hebrew religion, not in the East.
Catholic baptisms may be on any day, including Sunday. The only day that you may not have a Catholic baptism is during the Eastern Triduum which is Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday of Holy Week. If you pastor will not have baptisms on Sunday, that is a personal decision of his, most parishes do hold baptisms on Sunday, some of them even during Mass.
The fire and the holy water.
Currently the rituals involved the Bishop imposing his hands on the confirmand and anointing their head with Sacred Chrism.
It has 3 days from the evening of Holy Thursday to the Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. A Triduum is a period of three days preceding some special feast. The Easter Triduum is made up of Holy Thursday evening, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
A Triduum is "A period of three days of prayer, either preceding some special feast or preparing for some major enterprise. [It] Commemorates the biblical three days that Christ lay in the tomb." (from Modern Catholic Dictionary by Fr. Hardon, S.J. In the Catholic Church it is used most frequently to refer to the Easter (or Sacred) Triduum, which is composed of the last three days of Holy Week, i.e.: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. The Easter Triduum ends with the lighting of the Easter fire at the beginning of the Easter Vigil after dark on Holy Saturday night.
A Triduum is a period of three days of prayer, either preceding some special feast or preparing for some major enterprise. The Easter Triduum, commemorated the three days that Christ lay in the tomb, actually begins with the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday evening, so Lent ends as that Mass begins, and the Eastern Triduum begins.
