The Union was eventually led to victory by two very different characters, who happened to get on well, apparently because they both came from Ohio, and felt a kinship as fellow Northwesterners. Grant was a calm, methodical planner. Sherman was outwardly grim and forbidding, but also a creative problem-solver. It is possible to argue that Sherman's plan for wrecking the farms and railroads of Georgia shortened the war by months, whereas Grant's ten-month Siege of Petersburg could only be described as a plodding tactic.
