What is a torch wrench?

# If you mean "torque" wrench, that's a tool to assist a mechanic to accurately tighten a bolt to a pre-determined torque. Torque is the twisting force. If you over-torque bolts they will fail, if you UNDER-torque them, they will work loose. # If you really mean "torch wrench", that's a term some guys use in difficult situations. "Ah, nuts, I can't get that rusted bolt to come off so I'll just use the torch wrench" Sometimes it's called a "hot wrench" or whatever other euphemism the mechanic is accustomed to, but it's basically an acetylene torch with a cutting tip.

Are you supposed to torque bolts or nuts?

It depends on the application, if you are speaking generally. If you meant for applications where the bolt and nut are both present, and specific torque specifications are required, it really doesn't matter. Whichever is best accessible by the torque wrench. The only stipulation is that whichever item the torque wrench is not being used on, must be static (unable to turn). For example, if you are torquing the nut, the bolt must not be able to turn (held in place with a wrench, if necessary) while the torque wrench is being read, for a reading to be accurate.

How does a click type torque wrench work?

Well I'm not sure if you want the complete mechanical end of things... But i know some...The wrench will have usually a turn type of an adjuster on the handle specifying torque amount. It works as a ratchet wrench until you hit the specified torque and you'll feel and also hear the wrench head and handle make a loud click when you hit that desired setting."If you keep trying to ratchet the wrench will net let you go anymore it will just keep clicking until you change the torque amount up on the dial"------------------------------------------------------------------------That last statement is false- The wrench will continue to tighten the bolt/nut after it clicks. It will only click once which is when the tension 'Pawl' flicks to the side as the side tension out muscles the spring tension (torque setting you have set). Once it has flicked to the side it cannot go any further so will continue to tighten if you go past that point. If you ratchet back and have another go that is different but once you hear the click do not continue in the direction of tightening. It is very different to how say your 24V cordless drill would work.
