However, because of a homogenizing language policy, these ethnolinguistic differences have decreased and most of the languages other than French have been pushed to the brink of extinction.
In the last century Immigration has brought other ethnic groups to France -- most notably people from former French colonies such as Arabs, Berbers, Wolofs, Bambaras, Khmers, Malagasys, Vietnam-Cantonese and Vietnamese but also people from other parts of the world like Italians, Portuguese, Poles, Serbs, Croats, Albanians, Russians, Tamils and countless others.

∙ 12y agoThe main ethnic group in France is the white caucasian (also said 'European') group. A significant group is made up of people of black African descent, especially in the French oversea territories where they mixed diversely with Europeans. More recently immigration brought another wave of people of Black African descent who settled in mainland France, and a sizeable population of North-African descent.
