There seem to be two answers to this question - the historical and the the computer science answers. For the historical, consider the sum of human technology of, say, the tools used to make fire. At one end you would have the cave man with a piece of flint and a piece of iron ore making sparks to start his camp fire. At the other end you have an electronic spark plug inside of most internal combustion engines crafted from metal and ceramics with a high degree of precision engineering to burn a gasoline and air mix inside the combustion chamber. Intermediate technology would be a lighter, the match, and so on. For the computer science - there is the term " middleware ". Middleware is technology such as the IVRU - the integraged voice response unit - also known as that annoying menu you get on the phone before you get to a human for assistance. Its the technology sitting between two or more other technologies in a chain of communication.
