Technology is one of the prime important factors that have influenced work behaviour of employees in any organisation, over a period of time. Take example of Information Technology (IT) that has influenced almost all aspects in which business is performed, including work behaviour of work force.

Just a few decades back people used mechanical type writer, and typos were corrected by applying white fluids which was a very tedious job. Introduction of electronic type writer allowed the typist to see the previews of data on LCD display, where typist can do correction before before it is printed out. But they lived too short as they were replaced by PC and word processing software like WORD. This technology totally changed the way written communication was prepared in any organisation.

With internet becoming popular and email application becoming too common, employees started communicating with the help of emails, and post and telegraph department all over world had to find new business for their survival.

Spread sheet software & accounting software has changed the way financial decisions are made and with advent of work flow technology and ERP packages, employee's work behaviour has totally changed. Submitting claims electronically and getting the payment directly in bank that too at a great speed is common in almost all organisations. Technological development has resulted in the way employees submit leave applications, claims and other important document.

Other technology that changed behaviour of employees in material management department is e-commerce technology. This technology changed the way procurement clerks purchase material for the organisation, reducing lead time for procurement and timely payment to suppliers.

Telecommuting technology has made working from home via a computer linked to the office possible, in "virtual" office. Many types of jobs can be done this way by employees sitting at home, reducing commuting stress from their life.

Thus technology has always influenced behaviour of employees in many ways. Technology is never new to every human being. It is present from the beginning, from first people's discovery of fire until the discoveries of robotics, and it will continue to become more complex as time goes by. As some dictionaries define technology, "technology is the application of knowledge". Human will continue to seek knowledge and learning, thus, in the future it is expected that researchers and inventors will come up to a more complex invention and become more innovative.

However, technology affects the work force not only in a bad aspect. As Emmanuel Mesthene have put it, "Technology is neither good nor bad, it is neutral." It is a matter of how technology is used.

There are many factors here, but they can be broadly categorised into 4 groups.

The individual

The group

The organisation

The environment

Organisational behavior is human behaviour as seen in organisations so that's a very large field. Take the issue of orientations to work and jobs - professionals may see their job as a way of expressing their values while some clerical staff may see their job mainly in instrumental terms - it's a means to an end rather than an end in itself. Clerical jobs don't pay well so it's probably unrealistic to expect people to put their heart and soul into their work.

That's an issue around training, motivation, rewards, social status etc.
