My favorite book is called "Things Not Seen" by Andrew Clements. I read that book in 5th grade and it was really interesting. Another book I like is "A Stranger Came Ashore" by Mollie Hunter. I read this book in 6th grade, but I am sure a 5th grader could understand it. Both books are great reads. Once you start you really can't stop.
