Go to the library with them and let them pick out some books with things that they are interested in. You can pick some for them too. The librarian will be able to make some good picks for your child's age and there are all sorts available, age appropriate of course.
Good habits are coming from the society and heridity. If your friends are good, then you will be good. The age between 15 and 18 is the age for learning some good or bad habits. The Harry Potter series are classed as children's books, a good age to start reading them would probably be around ten. The Causal Vacancy is an adult book.
