There are many types of dogs out there, and I'm sure you are thinking of those cute fluffy show dogs, but I would have to say the best type of beginner dog is a Labrador. They are great companions, go great with people, and they can protect you as well. They also don't snore like pugs. :) Labs don't have many medical problems until they get old, which reminds me, they live long too!

If I were a first time owner with little experience and I wanted a larger breed I would consider a German Shephard or a Labrador Retreiver. They also have very good temperments, and as long as a trusting bond is formed with their owner they won't have any problems with training.
