I'm assuming you're talking to a guy that you like. This is what I used to do: I'd just pretend that he was my guy cousin. I know it sounds stupid, but it really works! I just pretended I was talking to this cousin of mine, then suddenly I didn't feel that shy. After a little while I'd kind of remember that I wasn't talking to him, but it was fine because I wan't shy anymore! After a little while I didn't even have to use this little trick, but it really works.
If that doesn't work for you (it did for me, but hey, we're all different), I'd drag out some old things that work and have been repeated again and again. If you're in the same class or share teachers, talk about that, or mutual friends. If you don't know him that well, try asking him about his favourite football team, siblings etc. Don't let him do all the talking, but neither should you!
