In New England the most common natural habitat is forest which covers every little crack and corner of New England. Over 50% of New England is rich forest. The second greatest habitat is water habitat. That includes rivers, lakes, ponds, wetlands, saltwater marshes, and of course the ocean. Areas in New England that have saltwater habitats are coastal Maine, south eastern New Hampshire, northeastern, and eastern and south eastern Massachusetts, eastern Rhode Island, and southern Connecticut. Freshwater habitats are found in inland New England. The best known freshwater habitats in New England are the Quabbin reservoir in central Massachusetts and lake Champlain in north western Vermont. Next grassland takes over. In New England grasslands can be found from Maine to central Connecticut. The largest grasslands in New England are found in Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Another major habitat in New England are cities and suburbs. Eastern Massachusetts is a classic example of this habitat because of Boston and the Boston metro area. The last major habitat in New England is mountains. Mountains are found from Maine to the north western Connecticut The most famous mountains in New England are mount katadin in Maine and Mount Washington in New Hampshire and mount Greylock in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
