There are very few major settlements in the Australian outback. Alice Springs, in Central Australia, is the most well known. Others are mining centres such as Mount Isa in western Queensland and Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia.

In modern times the words have become to mean the same thing, this history of the words will give some clue to the difference. The 'bush' refers to sparsely populated and uncultivated areas, usually covered with trees and shrubs and varying from open country to dense rain forest. The 'outback' referred to people or areas in the 'back country' the remote settlements. The origin of 'outback' is from the late 1870's referring to 'out in the back settlements.

There is no such desert as the Great Australian Desert. There are a number of deserts in that country that comprise the collective deserts of Australia that are sometimes referred to as 'The Outback.'
Man's greatest impact on the outback has been to introduce new species (such as the rabbit and fox) which have decimated some native species of Australia. Man has also introduced livestock which overgraze the countryside, leading to greater desertification and the reduction of grasslands, on which many Australian native species depend for their survival.
The interior of Australia is in the arid zone and receives little rainfall. Summers are intensely hot with cold nights, and winter days are pleasantly clear. The interior areas toward the north have a more tropical climate, with monsoonal weather in the summer months.
