The signs of menopause are: sensitive breasts hot and cold flashes moodiness forgetfulness missed periods no periods gaining weight (in all the wrong places) bloating constipation diarrhea headaches depression Some women get few hot/cold flashes or very few symptoms. Others may get one or two out of the above list. Please read up on menopause (your local book stores have great books on the subject) and learn about this new phase your body is going through. I went through mine with no HRT (not good for you because it's related to cancer of the breast and heart problems.) HRT is Hormone Replacement Therapy, and it's best to seek out a Homeopathic doctor and he/she can help you in this area. Menopause is just another area in which a woman is destined and nothing to be afraid of. No, you don't dry up and blow away and life is just beginning. No more periods, the kids (if you have any) are grown up and you can start to do what you want to do in your life. You can go back to college for a few courses (I did) get another job or go out and work and so many other wonderful things. I'm glad I've had my menopause and although doctors say it takes about 10 years, I think they are wrong. Once your periods cease, you will always be in menopause, but the symptoms will subside. Good luck Marcy

I sure wish that there was a simple answer to this question. Every woman is different - there is no" one size fits all" answer. There is simply no set age that every woman begins perimenopause and menopause. (I call it PM&M for short.)

The peri part can be a 6 -10 year process. During that time your hormone levels begin taking a nose dive - south! When your hormones drop you can begin experiencing all kinds of weird changes. Once you have been without your period for a whole year - then you have reached menopause.

First, find a doctor that specializes in PM&M.

A good way to determine if you are in PM&M is to have your hormone levels checked.

During PM&M our hormones take a dive south! Lowestrogen can cause crying, tension, hyper-sensitivity, mood swings, depression, poor self esteem, inability to concentrate, anxiousness, outbursts of anger, sleep disturbances, joint aches and pains, night sweats, hot flashes...just to name a few! Low testosterone can cause fatigue, dry skin, low libido and headaches. Some women experience next to no symptoms...some experiences many of these.

The following writing

has been taken from The Mayo Clinic :

It's possible, but very unusual, to menstruate every month right up to your last period. More likely, you'll experience some irregularity in your periods.

If you've skipped a period but aren't sure you've started the menopausal transition, you may want to determine whether you're pregnant. Skipping periods during perimenopause

is common and expected. Often, menstrual periods will occur every two to four months during perimenopause,

especially one to two years before menopause. Despite irregular periods, pregnancy is possible.

When to see a doctor
Starting at perimenopause,

schedule regular visits with your doctor for preventive health care and any medical concerns. Continue getting these appointments during and after menopause. Preventive health care can include recommended screenings at menopause, such as a colonoscopy,

mammography, lipid screening, thyroid testing if suggested by your history, and breast and pelvic exams.

Always seek medical advice if you have bleeding from your vagina after menopause.
