What are some negative aspects of a cat?

Cats are not as lethal as dogs but can cause injury with their spit. A cats spit has bacteria so when a cat bites you, you can possibly get an infection. Cats can also obviously scratch but they only scratch if they are very annoyed or are hurt. Caution: Do NOT pet a cat on the stomach because they will attack your hand. Unlike dogs, cats are very vulnerable in there stomach area and then deem you dangerous.

Cats generally aren't bad pets, but with any pet they need a lot of care and attention so they remain happy and healthy. Most cats only become destructive out of boredom, or a sudden change in behavior may indicate a health problem.

Cats have predatory instincts and even if you feed them, they may still kill birds for fun. Cats can be very demanding about when they are let into and out of your house. They may get into fights with other cats. They can become sick for many different reasons, just as people can, and will require treatment by a veterinarian, which can be very expensive, so the cat which was given to you for free as a kitten can wind up costing you ridiculous amounts of money. Many people are allergic to cats (specifically, to cat dander). Cats can pick up fleas and bring them into your house, and you too can be bitten by those fleas. And of course, even if everything is going well, cats do have to be fed and you have to periodically buy cat food, an expense that would be unnecessary if you did not have a cat. That money could instead have been used to buy DVDs of the latest movies. Cats may scratch their owners. They may also claw at the furniture. They have little sense of the value of your possessions.

Here are some reasons some people will never have a cat for a pet:

• Allergies to cats - quite common
• Ailurophobia - an irrational fear of cats
• Litter boxes - if the cat is an indoor cat, it requires an indoor toilet which demands upkeep and an appropriate cleaning schedule
• Cats scratch people. Yes, that can happen. Claws are their means of defense, but you can keep them short and you need to learn how to read your cat. I don't approve of declawing. Some places do not permit claw removal. The only adopted cat I ever had resorted to biting instead and we learned how not to push his buttons.
• Cats claw the furniture (not if you provide cat furniture, scratching pads and the training to go with them)
• Cats are aloof. Cats respond to their early kittenhood experiences. If they were showered with human love and attention when they were kittens, they will bond more easily with people and be better companion animals. Cats born and raised feral may never trust you.

Cats are not dogs:

• Cats come when called, if they feel like it
• Cats can be trained to walk on a leash, but only when they feel like it. Their meandering style of walking is usually not much exercise for their human.
• Cats are normally very territorial. Don't expect them to automatically like other cats. Play dates won't work for cats the way they work for dogs.
