Harold, King of England had to defend his claim but was outmanuvered by William, who sent a diversionary attack in the north. The English army had to quick march from the north to meet the Normans in Hastings. Harold was fatally wounded. William was crowned King.
The next must be the signing of the Magna Carta by King John in 1215. this was the first time the power of the king was restricted. The process is long and the current House of Lords could be said to have started then, as the power of the Lords over the King was first established in the Magna Carta. The House of lords is only now facing a possible conversion into an elected chamber.
