France has the same variety of minerals as any country of a similar size to France.

Gypsum is common in the marls and clays of the Paris basin (hence the name 'Plaster of Paris'), especially in Montmartre.

Minerals of particular note are BAUXITE which was first identified and mined in France from a place called Les Baux. Bauxite is the world's principal aluminium ore.

URANINITE was mined from a series of Uranium mines that were active in the Massif Central up until 20 years ago. Uraninite can still be found close to these old workings. It is highly probable that oxidised, soluble uranium 6+ minerals, such as Zippeite and Torbernite, are also found in that area.

SILVER, GOLD and copper minerals have previously been exploited from the Pyrennees in southern France and also in Brittany. The Salsigne gold mine was in production until 1998 which was part of a polymetallic deposit containing many other minerals (see reference below).

New Caledonia which is a semi autonimous French colony, in the southern Pacific Ocean, is famous for its lateritic nickel deposits where GARNIERITE is mined to this day. Other companies have been exploring (and finding) gold in the French colony of French Guiana in South America.
