The stomach is a muscle and if the person continues to purge then their stomach will continue to do so and the individual won't be able to stop purging. Eventually they will starve and the body will eat off itself. Some people with bulimia take medications to cause vomiting – ipecac is one, and it can damage all muscles including the heart, leading to heart failure. Other people take laxatives to cause diarrhea, and this can lead to long-term problems with large intestine function and salt balance in the blood. Diuretics (water pills) cause the body to get rid of water and salt, leading to dangerously low levels of potassium, disturbances of heart rhythm and death. Bulimics need psychological counseling to help them get over this problem and the sooner the better.
