Roman Catholic AnswerThere are many stereotypes against Catholics. I think the ones that you may have run into would depend on where you live. I can only speak as a Catholic who has lived in the eastern United States through the last half of the twentieth century. My home town had a large mix of religions and the stereotypes there were mostly connected with their ethnicity. Catholics were considered poor, backward people from Ireland, Italy, eastern Europe (Poland, Hungry, etc.) They had no control, and had too many children, they were superstitious and worshipped statues. Catholics have come a long way since the 19th & 20th century, they have tried to be more American than the "natives" (who were really not natives, but protestants who came from England). In doing so, many of lost their religious identity, and their religion. Those who cling to their religion are considered backward and counter-cultural. Protestants have tended to define the culture, and as the culture as become increasingly secular, they have as well. Catholicism clings to the teaching of Our Blessed Saviour, and those who follow it are doing the exact opposite of what the culture tells them is important. They do not use contraception, they do not abort their babies (and we can read the exact same criticisms of Catholics in the old Roman Empire!). Protestants have also assigned the word "Christian" to themselves, and following such hate mongers as Jack Chick, blame Catholics for all the ills of the world. Which should surprise no one as Our Blessed Lord, Himself, said "all the world will hate you".

Further

Many people do attribute stereotypes to various groups. Generally that is wrong. (Does anyone see the irony there?)

It is difficult to know what the asker means by 'against'. The answerer may be 'for' those reasons.

A:Typical stereotypes are that Muslims are terrorists; Jews are greedy; Catholics are hypocrites; atheists are incapable of morality. These stereotypes are different yet have one thing in common - people who identify as different to me are in some way inferior to me.Other stereotypes are that Muslims are peace-loving; Jews are great comedians; Catholics hold high moral values; atheists are tolerant.
