What are some reasons for a computer to become slow?

Computers slow down over time due to many different problems including Hardware and Software problems. It really isn't the age so much as the effects of saving and deleting files, temporary file overload and possible virus/bot/marketing from internet searches you

have made over time. Hopefully, you haven't loaded new programs that are beyond the scope of your computer's memory.

These problems include getting dust in cooling fans (which happens over time).

For computers that run Windows, you can run Disk Cleanup to lighten the load of your RAM. Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. There are also other things you can do in that menu. On the Disk Cleanup box, make sure to checkmark the first four items as well as the web based temporary files near the bottom.

Run the Disk Defragmenter after that. This will reorganize files and folders so they are in more efficient places on your harddrive, so that there is a contiguous area of unused space.

If things are particularly slow and/or weird, you should run anti-virus programs, like the free version of ad-aware (which picks up changes outside programs have made to your settings, etc. ) and your antivirus program.

There are a number of reasons for the slowdown of a PC. These include the scattering of important files over the system, so one may wish to use the Windows Disc Defragmenter. Another option may be the RAM is no longer enough to run the programs, particularly if the computer is older. Other causes may include too many applications running at the start up of the PC, or Registry Bloat.
