This was the first Union victory of the war. >> Captured Vicksburg in 1893 forcing open the Mississippi River. >> Sent Sherman south to Georgia while he concentrated on Lee, pinning him down at Petersburg VA (1864) >> Forced Lee into surrender at Appomattox Court House (VA)1865.

Did slaves fight during the civil war?

Yes, some slaves did fight during the Civil War. Initially, they were not allowed to join the Union army, but as the war progressed, the Union began to allow African-American men to enlist. Approximately 180,000 African-American soldiers, both free and formerly enslaved, served in the Union army and played a significant role in securing victory for the Union.

Where did some of the important battles take place in the Civil War?

Several of the most important battles of the Civil War, in the early years, occurred in northern Virginia. To name several, Manassas Junction - twice (also known as Bull Run), Chancelorsville, and Cold Harbor; all won by the Confererates. Each of these battles marked attempts by the Union to invade the Confideracy. The results of these battles created severe morale problems for the Union, uncovered weaknesses in the Union Army command, and demonstrated that the war would be long and deadly. One very important battle occurred in Maryland near Sharpsburg or Antietem Creek. It was tactically a draw, but strategically a Union victory, because the Confederates were forced to retreat to Virginia. It was one of the deadlest battles of the war. The most important battle of the entire war occured in Pennsylvania at Gettysburg. It was won convincingly by the Union and was the deadlest battle of the war. It was also the turning point of the war. After this battle the Confederates never entered Union territory again. In eastern Virginia there were two significant campaigns both referred to as the Battle of the Wilderness; both won by the Confederates. These campaigns contained numerous battles and skirmishes, all fought in dense forest and swampy areas. They were Union attempts to sieze Richmond, the Confererate capital. Further south, the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi was finally won after a year by the Union. Vicksburg's fall cut the Confereracy off from New Orleans and supplies brought up the Mississippi River. This was the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. One thing that was not a battle as such was the Union blockade of the Confederate port cities. This navel blockade was very effective and strangled the Confederacy's abilities to earn income from exports and import goods to support its military. The battle of the ironclads (the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia - the former USS Merrimack) was an attempt by the Confederates to break the blockade. The battle for Georgia included the siege and capture of Atlanta and Sherman's march to the sea. Here the Union army distroyed Atlanta along with its industry and its very important transportation and distribution fuctions. Sherman then marched from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia's major port, while destroying everything in a corridor about 90 miles wide. This action introduced the concept of "total war" to the world and gutted the Confederacy's ability to resupply its armies. There were many other battles and campaigns. These, I believe, were the key ones.

What events led to the Battle of Vicksburg?

Vicksburg had withstood a number of Union attempts to capture this fortress city on the Mississippi River. When after a long siege, the city surrendered, it was a propaganda victory for the North. US Grant led the Union forces in a series of battles to capture Vicksburg. When it fell, the Mississippi River was in the control of the Union. The captured Rebels were paroled and some returned to fight again. One problem about Vicksburg was that now a Union garrison was required to keep it in Union hands.

What was the importance of Vicksburg in the US Civil War?

There is a misconception regarding the importance of the fall of Vicksburg after a Federal siege. The logistics and military situation was not altered by Vicksburg's surrender. The Confederate high command had charged off Vicksburg in 1862. The loss of the city fortress and control of the Mississippi River did not add to the military situation for the Union. One thing that historians do agree on was that is was a Union propaganda victory. Some historians wrongfully believe that the fall of Vicksburg was a truning point in the war.

What would the union accomplish if they gain mississsippi river?

There is a persistent belief, that historians have corrected concerning the Union's control of the Mississippi River. Union cargo on the river did not increase to levels even from 1860. The idea that the South was cut in half sounds great except some mathematics shows that two Southern states and part of another lay west of the Mississippi River. Contrary to popular belief, supples from the West did not flow eastward through Vicksburg. A careful study of the situation indicates that the Union scored a propaganda victory when Vicksburg surrendered.

What battles of the civil war were fought near and in Arkansas?

Fort Hindman was fought in Arkansas - a Union victory that formed no part of the Vicksburg campaign strategy, more-or-less a diversion or distraction. But many small engagements took place on the West bank of the Mississippi during this campaign, some in Arkansas.

What are some events leading up to the Battle of Vicksburg?

Even though the war in the East was going poorly for the North, the war in the West proved more promising. Grant had captured Ft. Henry on the Cumberland and Ft. Donaldson on the Tennessee Rivers, and had prevented a Confederate victory at Shiloh, though he came under heavy criticism for the heavy casualties his forces suffered. New Orleans fell to naval forces and most of the Mississippi north and south of Vicksburg stood in Union hands.

What are some of the descriptions of the US Civil War Battle of Vicksburg?

The Union's attempt to capture the Confederate city of Vicksburg, Mississippi began in the Spring of 1862 by the US navy. This attempt failed. Later the Union's efforts became more intense and over a two year series of battles the situation reached a stalemate. Finally, a siege led by US Major General US Grant forced the garrison at Vicksburg to surrender on July 4, 1863.
