Bring lots of water. Don't camp right by the river because it can flash flood without warning. Remember that it takes twice as long to go uphill as it does to go downhill; don't get carried away with hiking down because it's much harder to go back up, especially in the heat of day.

∙ 8y agoCarry a cell phone with you. However, do be aware that in remote hills, there may have little coverage... You might want to bring walkie-talkies in case you get separated from others who are hiking with you. A GPS is a good to have if you are not on a marked trail.
Wear comfortable shoes and socks. Wear boots if you are hiking where snakes are likely. Long sturdy pants are a good idea.
Carry water with you if you are going very far or the weather is hot.
If you have special medical needs, do make sure you bring what you need. If you are a diabetic at risk of passing out from low blood sugar, then you'd want to bring some emergency candy. If you have Allergies, then bring the appropriate remedies such as antihistamines or epinephrine.
Hike only where it is safe and legal to hike. If you hike during hunting season, wear orange and watch out for hunters, or avoid hunting grounds altogether.
Stay on the trail if one exists. That will help keep you from getting lost and keep you away from certain dangers like cliffs and farmers' bulls.
If you are hiking in a area where there are wild bears or other ferocious wildlife, learn what to do if you encounter one.
Beware of the possibility of flash floods in dry stream beds.
Do not walk where trains are likely. One sigh to look for is railway lines with shiny tops.
