1) Install anti-virus software on the computer and keep it up-to-date with virus definition files and any applicable patches

3) Use an OS based firewall

A well configured Firewall, Periodic Scanning with good and updated anti-virus(I prefer avast), use of antimalware, antispyware applications, do not view or download attachments in email that come from unknown sources.. prevent maximum installation of cracked softwares and games..they can contain Trojans. Do not visit unsafe or malicious websites..etc etc

Keep Windows Firewall on. Have an anti-virus program running all the time. Don't download anything from the web unless you are sure it can be trusted.
