Unlike WWI, WWII, Korea, when allied forces were ADVANCING (taking ground); Vietnam was fought by "attrition"...taking body counts; then leaving the area; returning again if more bodies could be attained. Unlike those previous wars, in Vietnam the same ground could have battles fought on it over and over again; because, as mentioned before, victory was measured with the "body count" not by territory seized. What led to the battle of Ia Drang was the Army's need to test it's new concept in military warfare: Air Mobility. To test this new idea, the helicopter would be the prime subject. The army already had paratroopers, they had been tested and proven in combat during WWII; creating the US Army Airborne Divisions (that never existed prior to WWII). Now, the US Army intended upon imploying AIRMOBILE Divisions, borne by choppers not parachutes! In addition to this experiment, the US Army was going to mass test it's new "jungle rifle", the rapid firing fully automatic capable M-16 Assault Rifle. Then they needed an adversary; they found one in the Ia Drang Valley.
