The proven means of shutting in a well after the blow out preventers have failed is to drill a relief well. BP is currently drilling 2 wells, one well as a back up. The problem with this solution is that due to the depth of the blow out, it takes 3 months.
The "top kill" is not a proven means of killing a well at 5,000 ft of water depth. There is a significant chance of failure. As of May 28, it is not known if this has succeeded. If it works, it has shorten the time to kill the well by 40 to 60 days.
Other alternatives are to cut the riser pipe where is comes out of the blow out preventer and to place a second blow out preventer over the first one. This is also unconventional at 5,000 ft of water.
By late July, if top kill or other procedures have not succeeded, the relief wells will almost certainly, succeed.
