well, he was able to cross the entire sea ,but he didint notice that he had discovered america or what we call now in days north america and south america.he also started calling the native americans indians because he thought that he was in India ,because his expedition was to find a route to china. hope this information help u....

He broke the isolation of the continents in the sense that there was no interaction between the Americas and Europe before his time, thus it is plausible to see him as being one of the seeds that grew into the modern understanding that we are all on one world. By breaking the isolation between continents, he introduced new ideas and goods to the people of the new world, such as textiles. He colonized South America for Spain, which would be considered good from the Spanish point of view. He also discoved the "new world" for the Spanish and other European countries. The fact that the land was already inhabitted does not negate this fact.

On a personal note, he also seems to have ensured that his two sons were taken care of while he was on his voyage, as they became pages for one the Spanish princes of that time (Prince Juan, the son of the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella - see link)
