Gerbils, hamsters, and mice are all good pets, although they do have a tendency to bite, and you can't really interact with them very much. Rats (surprisingly!) are clean, smart, and very sociable! They make very good pets. My favorite small furry pets while growing up were my guinea pigs. They require quite a bit of work to take care of, but they will pay you back with lots of love and affection. They're full of personality and are very sweet creatures. They can also be a great way to help teach kids about trust and responsibility if you feel that your child is old enough to take care of their little pets. Taking care of another life is a really solid and positive growing experience for a lot of kids, as it was for me!
