There are a variety of methods for retrofitting buildings available to engineers. A summary list can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seismic_retrofit

Retrofitting is extremely important as many of the high-rise and large population capacity buildings that were built early in the 20th century, were built prior to the adoption of building codes which account for multiple load conditions. Multiple load conditions were established to determine a "worst case scenario" for structural loading. This helps ensure that a building will survive a loading situation that would otherwise cause the building to fail.

As such, retrofitting becomes the sole method of ensuring that pre-code buildings are brought up to code to ensure the safety of their occupants.

Unlike other fields of engineering, the major advancement of the filed has been in the early years of the centuiry befor the last century where the use of conrete technogy is advented. The use of cement as a construction material. since the turn of the last century, improvemnet in the field increase by the use of steel elements in the construction of buildings and bridges of various types. with the help of two it was possible to do muti storey buildings in the world. Machineries were created to speed up the construction structures. The last century has also seen the advent of sophisticated design to withstand the effect of earth quake that was not possible before. With the use of computers, development ofmodel and analysiss of structures under the effect of laods was made possible. Before just two decades, it used to take months amd months to design high rise building and big bridges. Now it is a matter of hours .

What is the best drip irrigation system?

Depending on the crop grown, a subsurface drip system is the most water efficient irrigation system as it delivers water directly to the root zone and experiences virtually no wastage from evaporation or run off. The most efficient subsurface system is Subsurface Textile Irrigation which uses up to 60% less water than surface irrigation and 30% less than conventional subsurface drip irrigation. Subsurface Textile Irrigation has a long life span, requires less maintenance, is simple to retrofit and is the safest way to use recycled water as it disperses the water undergound and there is no tunneling of water to the surface. STI is used throughout the world to irrigate crops, sports fields, public parks and gardens and even residential back yards and green roofs.

How do you stop a slow leak from a pressured toilet tank that drips from the plastic valve on the top?

It depends on the manufacturer of the pressure tank. Call them for an answer. The most common is the Sloan Flushmate system it is used by most toilet manufacturers. Kohler made their own system but it was a lemon and was discontinued they offer a retrofit tank to use the Sloan Flushmate system cost is $125 call Sloan for p/n details it has to be ordered from Kohler and will take about a month to get. Eljer also makes their own. Sloan Flushmate 800-533-3460 Kohler 920-457-4441 Eljer 800-423-5537 Repairs on these toilets can get time consuming, & expensive, replacement may be a better option. My recommendations for replacement toilets are the Toto Drake and the Kohler Cimmeron both of which are fantastic toilets that will be very unlikely to clog. Avoid Am Std Champion as there are some serious quality control issues.
