Fifth disease, or 'slapped face' is a mild rash caused by a virus. It is common in school-age children, especially in winter and spring. It is called slapped face because it makes your cheeks very red, as if you had been slapped in the face. They think that it is caused by respiratory secretions in the air (from sneezing or coughing), so the virus is usually transmitted to family members, and sometimes to classmates. It is not a serious illness, and most adults have had the virus and become immune to it. The symptoms usually start out with a mild illness, sore muscles, some times fever, sore throat, and nasal drainage. about a week later the facial rash shows up. there is also usually a pinkish rash that starts out on the arms, and spreads to the trunk and legs. These rashes last about four days, and then fade. the illness will go away when it has run its course, and there is no need for treatment. usually by the time you feel any symptoms, the virus has been contagious for about a week. If your child has fifth disease make sure he or she drinks a lot of water, and gets plenty of rest. Also be careful to make sure that you, your child and any brothers or sisters or close friends wash your hands regularly, and cover your mouths when you cough or sneeze to prevent spreading the virus.
