That's entirely what they are used for. A normal piston will push a block up, or across, but not pull it back when it retracts. If you need the block to get pulled back, use a Sticky Piston instead.

i don't think it's possible because pistons can't push or pull (with sticky pistons) obsidian and bedrock.( i tried to do it to make a bank vault)
They have no purpose apart from throwing them (like snowballs). An update may come out where they become useful. UPDATE: You can make Sticky Pistons, which can grab a block 2 blocks away from being placed and bring it back.
