  • Approximately 80% of newly infected patients are asymptomatic. The remaining 20% of newly infected patients have symptoms that include fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, or a condition known as yellow jaundice. Jaundice occurs when a yellow-colored compound called bilirubin builds up in the body, tinting the whites of the eyes and skin. At the same time, the urine may take on a dark brown 'cola' color and stools may become gray or light tan. These symptoms typically develop 4-12 weeks after exposure to HCV. Some people describe the symptoms as being flu-like.

people infected with acute hep C may have mild symptoms early on, which generally behave like the common flu. They may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain

Over time, untreated hep C becomes chronic hepatitis C, which may cause damage to the liver, weakening liver cells and eventually killing them. This process can leave behind scarred liver tissue called "fibrosis".As the damage and scarring progresses, it becomes harder for the liver to work properly. The final stage of liver scarring is known as cirrhosis. At this advanced disease level, some people may begin to experience symptoms such as:

  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes, also called jaundice
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dark urine
