The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW), is a congressionally chartered war veterans organization. VFW currently has 1.6 million members and is the largest American organization of combat veterans. Members must be US citizens and be currently serving in the US Military or have an honorable discharge from the US Armed Forces. Membership also requires military service overseas during a conflict and decorated with an expeditionary medal, a campaign medal or ribbon. Receipt of imminent danger/hostile fire pay is accepted for membership. A DD214 or World War II era discharge paper with campaign medals, and or badges printed on back is used to verify membership eligibility.
As for what it does, it is veterans helping veterans, their families, widows, and orphans, as well as their communities. They are often found involved in community activities, such as an honor guard for a funeral, placing flags on graves, marching in parades, etc. They also often donate to charitable causes.
The organization currently has around 1.6 million members, and has posts all around the country.

The "American Legion" was created by WWI veterans in about 1919. The "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW) was created by Spanish-American Veterans of 1898, and is our oldest Veterans group. The "American Veterans" (AMVETS) was created by WWII veterans. Originally, these veteran groups were open to only their own veterans, but as time went by they opened to all "qualified" veterans.
