This is a difficult question, because you are facing several different classifications that you need to narrow down. There really is no "Worlds Busiest Airport" per se, but there are different classifications which you can narrow it down to. The three main categories would be Passenger Traffic, Cargo Traffic, or just plain Traffic Movements (flights in and out each day, total). The reason you cannot classify them all together is as follows:

-Passenger Traffic: The busiest Passenger Traffic airports will be no doubt "busy", but the actual amount of flights would be less, due to the problems of airport traffic delays, and other problems. So, although the airport would be "busy" indeed, flights registered in and out would register a bit less. In short, it's possible to have less planes, but more planes full.

-Cargo Traffic: The busiest Cargo Traffic airports usually register more flights in/out than passenger traffic, but these flights do not matter to official agencies keeping track of passenger flights. They do not see as many problems with delays, because there are less passengers to keep track of, and cargo planes are never regional jet sized aircraft, therefore they suffer less weather delays as well. (The larger the plane, the less chance of a weather delay, and the more capabilities it has to fly in bad weather).

-Traffic Movements: The total amount of traffic movements considered can also be a point for measuring the busiest airport, but may or may not be leaned toward passenger or freight/cargo airports. Compared to the "Passenger Traffic", think of it as more planes, but less planes full.

Now that these points are clear, here are the numbers for the top airports of the world:

-Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This airport has successfully registered the largest number of flights in and out in one year for a few years in the past decade.

-Memphis International Airport, Memphis, TN, USA. This airport has registered the most amount of cargo moved in gross tons in one year for several years in a row. This is also the home and main transfer station of UPS.

-London-Heathrow International Airport, London, England. This airport has the record several years in a row for most passengers moved.

-Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Los Angeles, CA, USA. This airport has the record for most origin to destination, or non-connecting flights. Direct flights to LAX are available at almost every major airport in the USA.

-Van Nuys Airport, Van Nuys, CA, USA. This airport holds the record of the most takeoffs and landings for general aviation. Includes small and private aircraft.

-Frankfort International Airport, Frankfurt, Germany. This airport has the record for most Internatinal Destinations served. Traffic is not taken into consideration, passenger or aircraft. Only the fact that it is possible to connect to more International Destinations than any other airport in the world.
