Written Scale, Representative Scale, and Digital Scale.
Graphical method: A bar divided into smaller bars is labeled with feet or miles.
(Note with this method, if the map is enlarged or reduced on a copier, you
can still find real-world distances) Also, this is typically the type of scale
shown on an online map (such as Yahoo, Google, or Bing)
Verbal method: example 1 inch = 10 miles
1 inch on the map represents 10 miles (or 4.5 inches represent 45 miles)
Fractional method: it might say something like 1:50000 or 1/50000
1 inch on the map represents 50000 inches in the real world
in this example 50000 inches is about 0.789 miles, so if you measured
4.0 inches, multiply by 0.789 to get 3.156 miles.
Note that this last method is not dependent on metric or English system,
so for 1:50000, 1 cm represents 50000 cm (or 500 meters or 0.5 km)

Distance miles and kilometers
if a map show the straight line distance between two cities as 3 and one half centimeters and the map scale show that 1 centimeter equals 100 kilometers what would the actual distance be ?
A map should include a key,a way to measure distance, and a compass rose.
BOLTSS is the name given to essential parts of a map that are often not included in or on the map.B: Border - To show the edges of the map. The limits of the area covered by the map. There is usually (but not always) an overlap of the borders of adjoining maps of the same series.O: Orientation - To show which way is north, usually directed with a compass An indication of north, usually by an arrow pointing to the top of the map. If there is no arrow the top of the map is assumed to be north. Also can mean aligning the map to features on the ground (north south east west).L: Legend (Or Key) - To explain the symbols used on the map. Symbols on the map that represent natural or artificial features on the ground. (Also known as a key)T: Title - To tell the reader what the map is for or what place is drawn on it. The name of the map identifying the geographic area that it covers.S: Scale - To give the reader an idea of the distances shown on the map. A linear and/or ratio indicating distance on the map to distance on the ground.(There are 3 types of ways you can represent scale on a map. The 1st way is by words, the 2nd way is by ratio and the last way is linear.S: Source - To provide the source of the information on which the map has been based.

( inches is three times 3 inches, so three times 100 miles is 300 miles
I think its 1000 because 3/4 is 750 and 2/4 is 500 * * * * * NO. There is no general rule: it will depend on the map and the scale should be given on the map.
