The most important single cause was impressment of American seamen into the English Navy. American desire for free trade with all nations -- including France -- also was a source of stress. English Navy ships had seized a number of American trading ships and whalers. England refused to recognize the Lousiana Purchase and American control of the Gulf Coast. Many Americans believed that a war would lead to American control of Canada or even its addition to the Union.

President James Madison argued for war against Britain, the US ports were being blocked, and American sailors being pressed into service by the British military were causes of the War of 1812. Also the British inciting the Native Americans to violence towards Americans and the violation of America's neutral rights contributed to the War of 1812.
